(Macau).- Macau is poised for a surge in tourism as SJM Holdings unveils plans to expand Casino Lisboa by acquiring 7,504 sqm of legacy gaming space from its parent venture under STDM. This strategic move marks a key milestone in SJM’s broader initiative to strengthen its market presence and elevate the casino’s appeal on the Macau Peninsula.

Macau, widely acknowledged as a global casino epicentre, anticipates a substantial uplift in visitor numbers following the imminent enlargement of Casino Lisboa.
SJM Holdings, a principal gaming stakeholder in the enclave, has disclosed intentions to purchase seven thousand five hundred four square metres of legacy gaming floor from its controlling entity, a unified venture under Sociedade de Turismo e Diversoes de Macau (STDM). The transaction, earmarked for consolidation into the existing footprint of Casino Lisboa, constitutes an integral segment of SJM’s comprehensive programme to consolidate and enhance its competitive positioning on the Macau Peninsula.
This strategic acquisition is expected to elevate the casino’s appeal, as SJM consolidates its position as a dominant player in Macau’s tourism and entertainment sector. By repurposing the acquired space, the company aims to attract more visitors, both local and international, ensuring Casino Lisboa remains a top destination for tourists seeking a unique blend of gaming, luxury, and leisure.
Boosting Macau’s Tourism through Casino Lisboa Expansion
The addition of the Hotel Lisboa space will allow SJM to redeploy gaming tables and slot machines from several of its satellite casinos, which are set to close by the end of 2025. This expansion will not only enhance the gaming experience but also contribute significantly to boosting the region’s tourism figures. By providing more space for both casual and VIP gamers, SJM expects to increase foot traffic, extend customer stays, and generate higher non-gaming spending, such as dining, entertainment, and hotel bookings.
The close connection between Hotel Lisboa and Grand Lisboa will also create a more integrated resort experience, setting the stage for the largest integrated resort on the Macau Peninsula. As Macau continues to compete with other Asian gaming and tourism destinations, this move positions SJM to capitalise on the growing demand for premium, integrated resort experiences.
Satellite Casino Closures and Strategic Streamlining
SJM’s acquisition comes amidst a wider restructuring strategy aimed at optimising its satellite casino portfolio. In 2025, seven satellite casinos are expected to close, a decision that reflects the company’s strategic shift towards consolidating its gaming operations in flagship properties like Casino Lisboa and Grand Lisboa. The company is also considering acquiring other casinos, such as Casino L’Arc Macau and Casino Ponte sixteen, which will further enhance its ability to serve the growing tourism demand in the region.
The closure of satellite casinos and the expansion of flagship properties are part of a broader effort to streamline operations and enhance profitability. By focusing on its most high-performing locations, SJM aims to reduce operational inefficiencies and boost tourism revenue.
Expanding Luxury and Non-Gaming Offerings to Attract Tourists
While gaming remains the main draw, SJM is also expanding its non-gaming offerings to ensure a balanced appeal to all types of travellers. The newly expanded Casino Lisboa will enhance its positioning in both the VIP and premium-mass segments, which have become increasingly important to the Macau tourism market.
Additionally, SJM is investing in new dining concepts and expanding its MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) facilities at Grand Lisboa Palace Resort. These developments are expected to attract business tourists, complementing the leisure tourism influx. The completion of these new facilities, pending licensing approval, will provide a further boost to the region’s tourism economy, offering more choices for visitors seeking a wide range of activities beyond traditional casino gaming.
Macau’s Resilient Tourism Market
Macau has long been a global leader in the casino and tourism industry, drawing millions of visitors each year. Despite global economic challenges, the region’s appeal as a luxury and entertainment destination remains strong. SJM’s latest expansion plans aim to ensure that Macau maintains its competitive edge in the region’s thriving tourism market.
In the first half of 2025, SJM saw an increase in revenue driven by a rise in gaming and non-gaming segments. The company’s flagship properties, including the Grand Lisboa Palace Resort, saw higher occupancy rates, with room rates and stable occupancy continuing to drive growth.
The Road Ahead for Macau’s Tourism
SJM’s strategy to enlarge the Casino Lisboa footprint, refine operational efficiencies, and strengthen revenue management reinforces Macau’s durability amid shifting market conditions. The resort’s enlarged boundary will now accommodate a more diverse visitor profile, thereby reinforcing the enclave’s status as a pre-eminent global hub for discerning travellers in search of an integrated offering of luxury, entertainment, and upscale leisure.
